Coached at Hammond Tech High School, starred in basketball and baseball at Hazel Green High School in Wisconsin, graduating in 1922 switched to football at Wisconsin State College, where he was a 3-year center coached Hammond Tech High School to state championship in '40, despite not having a gymnasium in which to practice .. that victory was the first title for the Calumet area, and sparked a celebration and parade in downtown Hammond to rival the reaction to the end of the war.
