Earned nine letters as 3-sport standout at Gary Froebel...All-City in basketball...member of track team that won state title twice and national championship once...all-state football player as a senior...starred at Western Michigan in football and track, co-captaining that team his senior year...spent 2 years working in Gary steel mills when teaching jobs were scarce, but then began a 38-year career in education...coached Gary Roosevelt to final four in 1965, losing to Fort Wayne North...3 years later won the whole show, defeating Vincennes and Shortridge to cap 22-5 season, with Jim Nelson winning the coveted Trester Award.
