Though his high school and college careers as a basketball player were, in his own words, "brief," he coached Thorntown to the state championship in 1915 ... won 8 sectionals, 2 regionals and a state runner-up team, the latter coming at Kokomo ... as track coach, won 7 state track meets in 20 yrs at Lebanon, and also coached football 12 years ... along with Logansport Coach Cliff Wells, started the Big Four Tournament, the state's first high school holiday invitational ... also credited with being first Indiana school official to stage a flag-raising ceremony at a high school basketball game.
