A 4-year starter at Terre Haute's State High School, where there were only 90 boys in the upper 4 grades ... team record 75-10 during that span ... team captain as senior in 1946 ... 4-time city champions ... sectional champions in '44 ... though a defensive specialist who guarded the opponent's toughest player, he scored 10 points in the Indiana- Kentucky all-star game ... played a year at Indiana State for Coach John Wooden, but left school to work ... began officiating career that took him to 2 state finals during 18-year high school career.
