SCOTTSBURG'S HIGH-SCORING ALL-STAR. A key to 3 straight sectional championships for Scottsburg High School before graduating in 1956. A 6'6" frontcourt player, Vern's high game was 47 points. He led his team to a regional victory as a senior, losing to eventual state champion Crispus Attucks in the semi-state final. He was a 1956 Indiana All-Star. He played at Transylvania College for Coach C.M. Newton. Named to all-Kentucky intercollegiate freshman team, he transferred to Illinois, where he earned 2 varsity letters.
