John played two years as a starter, was named All conference two years and was selected twice to the All-State team. He was also chosen as a member of the Indiana All-Stars. He played three years of college ball at Auburn University and was named All-Conference each year in the SEC as well as that league's Player of the Year in 1971. He was named All-American in both his junior and senior years and went on to a ten year career in the NBA with Cincinnati, Detroit, and Chicago.
