Playing for his father and Hall of Famer Bill Shepherd, Sr., Billy scored 2,465 points in four years of competition. He ranked fourth in all-time scoring in Indiana and was a two-time All-State selection. After averaging 32 points per game his junior and senior years, he was selected Mr. Basketball in 1968. He and his dad were the first father-son combination selected for the Indiana All-Stars. He scored 70 points in a single game. He went on to play three years for Hall of Famer Tony Hinkle at Butler University. He's Butler's all-time leading scorer with over 1700 points.
