A walk-on, the 6' 5" Zimmer enrolled at Indiana…his sophomore year he started just two games and played as a backup when the 1940 Hoosiers won the NCAA title…was a recipient of the Balfour and Gimbel Awards. He retired as a Colonel in the Marines, where he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star while serving in WWII and Korea.
