During junior and senior seasons, he led the Marion High School Giants to consecutive state basketball championships in 1975 & 1976....the team enjoyed 51 wins and six losses during these illustrious years under Hall of Fame Coach Bill Green....after averaging 26.5 points per game during his senior year, he was named the Trester Award winner and Mr. Basketball for 1976....the success continued at the University of North Carolina with Coach Dean Smith, as the team won 98 games and lost only 27 during the next four years....the collegiate highlights include an NCAA Runner-Up 1977, ACC Championship 1977,78 & 79, free throw award 1979, All ACC Tourney Team 1979 and Team Captain 1980.
