INDIANA BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME

The Indiana Basketball of Fame will honor the Women's Silver Anniversary Team on Saturday, April 24 at the Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis.  Ticket information may be secured by calling 765-529-1891.

Susan Baas                            Southport 1979                      IU/IUPUI/Butler

Sectional champions 1976, 1978…All-County, All-Sectional and Regional 1977-79, All-Semi-State 1978-79…All-State Honorable Mention 1979…attended Indiana University on a basketball scholarship…transferred to IUPUI with a full basketball and softball scholarship.  Currently working as an IT Applications Tester RCI Carmel.

Debbie Benak                                   Hammond Bishop Noll 1979  Illinois State 1983

Averaged 15.8 ppg and 15 rpg in 1977, 22.1 ppg and 8 rpg in 1978, 18.1 ppg and 12.7 rpg in 1979…played basketball at Illinois State 1980-83…has record for most games played (133) and best winning percentage as team was 90-43 in games she played in…scored 1,290 points (10th on school list) and grabbed 598 rebounds (10th on school list)…career field goal percentage of .517 (still 5th was 1st at one time)…led team in field goal percentage in three seasons, the only Redbird player to ever do that…college team was in the Top 30 in the country all 4 years…now Senior Project Manager for Software Development GEAWS, Lakewood, Colorado.

Indiana All-Star…1978 Team Defensive Award, 1979 Team MVP, 1977-79 All-Hoosier Conference, All-Sectional and Regional…attended Creighton and Hanover College…named All-NAIA District I as a senior…employed at DeMeter, Inc. Fowler, Indiana.

Tracey Sargent Burton    Bedford North Lawrence 1979             Indiana State

Sectional Champions 1978…1977-79 leading scorer and MVP…Hoosier Basketball Coaches All-Star 1979…1979 Second Team All-State…attended Indiana State.

Barbara Graves                    Anderson Madison Heights 1979      Indiana State

Indiana All-Star…during her junior and senior years at Madison Heights she averaged 17.7 ppg, 11.6 rpg and 7.3 assists…attended Indiana State and was Athlete of the Year…also named to Indiana State All-Century Team…scored 1,498 points (4th on ISU all-time list) played in 116 games (1st all-time)…made 651 field goals (2nd all-time) 898 rebounds (3rd all-time)…had 315 steals (1st all-time)…one of nine players in school history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds…played professionally for 2 years…tried out for the Harlem Globetrotters…currently a service provider UPS.

Normela Upshaw Haire        EC Roosevelt 1979    California State at Long Beach

State Champions 1977 and 1979…never lost a season, sectional or regional game…played four years at  California State at Long Beach…played professionally in Ireland and won a championship in 1986…Account Executive PC Mail Business Solutions.

Kim Land                              North Central 1979               Indiana University

Indiana All-Star…1979 Converse All-American…1978 & 1979 All-State…1980 All Big Ten Freshman…at Indiana University 1984 team captain…totaled 888 points , 277 rebounds and 341 assists in IU career…assist total is still 7th on schools all-time list…played professionally in the European League 1984…currently National Sales Representative for Life Fitness in Franklin Park, Illinois.

Indiana All-Star…1976-79 All County and All-Conference…1977-79 Indiana All-State Team…1979 AP First Team All-State…played basketball and volleyball at Indiana University…had 758 points and 421 rebounds for her college career…currently teacher, head volleyball coach and assistant basketball coach at Center Grove High School.

Barbara Skinner                   Mt. Vernon (Fortville) 1979    Butler University

Indiana All-Star…career scoring record 1228…team won sectionals 1976-79, regionals 1976-78 and was State Runner-up in 1977…graduated from Butler with 8 varsity letters…scored 1,448 points (4th on Butler all-time list)…averaged 14.5 points (3rd on Butler list)…had 509 career assists (3rd), 5.1 assist average (2nd), 302 steals (3rd)…787 career FT percentage (7th)…made 600 FG’s (3rd), 1,442 FG attempts (1st)…team record for her four years was 88-12, including 21-1, 26-2, 23-3 and 18-6…currently a guidance counselor at Lawrence North High School.

Cynthia Ocker                      Blue River Valley 1979         University of Iowa

Third all time leading scorer in Blue River Valley history…1977-79 All-Conference,  All-Sectional and Regional…Hoosier Basketball Magazine All-State…senior year averaged 18.5 ppg…attended the University of Iowa…currently secretary for New Ross Veterinary Service, New Ross, Indiana.

 LaTaunya Pollard Romanazzi    EC Roosevelt 1979   California State at Long Beach

Miss Basketball 1979…holds numerous school and IHSAA records…team won 1977 and 1979 State Championships…played four seasons at California State at Long Beach, scored 3,001 points (still school’s all-time leader, a career average of 23.4 ppg (also 1st)…holds seven school records and in the top 10 of 15 statistical categories…played professionally in Europe…currently a housewife in Spring, Texas.

Jane Emkes Schlesinger      Seymour 1979                        Ball State University

All-Sectional 1977-79, All-Conference 1978-79, holds assist record for a game of 19 at Seymour…MVP 1978-79…Converse All-American Honorable Mention 1979…played at Ball State University…scored 710 points and had 195 rebounds in varsity games…MAC All-Tourney Team 1981, MAC All-Academic HM 1983…selected to the Ball State All-Decade Second Team during the 1990’s…currently Senior Vice President Bear Creek Corporation, Medford, Oregon.

Melinda Sparkman               Scottsburg 1979                     Indiana University

Graduated holding 10 school records, single game points (46), single game rebounds (29)…1977-79 Team MVP… 1977-79 Louisville Courier Journal All-State…played four seasons at Indiana University…had 489 career points and 292 career rebounds…played with Athletes in Action…currently Director-Financial Reporting Analysis Louisville, Kentucky, 15 years as 8th grade Coach at Scottsburg and Varsity Assistant in 1989.

Karen Bauer Stenftenagel    Jasper 1979                           Ball State Univeristy

IHSAA mental Attitude Winner 1979…team was in Final Four in 1979 with a 21-2 record…played four seasons at Ball State University…scored 1,095 points (12th on BSU all-time list)…had 760 rebounds (4th on BSU list)…inducted into the Ball State Hall of Fame in 2000…teacher and head basketball coach at Jasper High School.

Wayne Journal All-First Team 1976-79…All-Conference 1976-79, MVP 1978 and 1979…career leading scorer men or women 18 ppg…played basketball and ran track and cross country at Florida  State…for one year, currently Sales Manager for Superior Distributing, Louisville, Kentucky.

Indiana All-Star…1979 Hoosier Mini Miss Basketball…1977-79 Mid-State All-Conference, 1978 & 1979 All-County…attended Marion College (Indiana Wesleyan) MAIA Honorable Mention All-American…scored 1,516 points/16.8 ppg (6th on IWU All-time list)…averaged 2.9 assists per game (14th on IWU All-time)…currently an Accounting Clerk for R.H. Marlio Crane Rental, Indianapolis, Indiana.
