DON JELLISON NAMED ST. VINCENT SILVER MEDAL AWARD WINNER

Don Jellison, sports editor of the Noblesville Daily Times, will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on March 24, 2004, at the annual awards banquet at the Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis. Don has been writing about Indiana high school basketball since 1956.

Each year the Hall of Fame honors one individual that has made a significant contribution to high school basketball in some capacity other than as a player or coach. Don’s life has been one of service to young athletes, coaches and to his readers. In addition to being a successful sportswriter, Don is an outstanding gentleman, a prominent citizen and a dedicated servant to Noblesville, Hamilton County and the State of Indiana. 

In 1983, Don received the Indiana District III Basketball Coaches Award for his outstanding contributions to Indiana high school basketball. In 1988-89, he was the recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award for District III. He has also been inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame.

One of Don’s greatest achievements was serving as the statewide director for the Babe Ruth Baseball League in Indiana for twenty-five years. The baseball league was struggling at the time he took the position and then, under his direction, the league became the largest in the United States. He has also supported and guided many Show Case Camps for several years.

One athletic director describes Don as one that provides coverage and dedication of high school sports that goes far beyond game coverage and statistics. He gives the human-interest side of the players and coaches involved in the sport. Don is able to give his readers the true meaning and insight of what Indiana high school sports is truly all about. He is described as one of the best in the business in handling coaches after a game. Win or lose, a coach knows he/she is going to be interviewed by a friendly, understandable professional that has the coach’s and players best interest in mind.
