Graduated from Loogootee High School in 1951 as school’s all-time leading scorer…also led his team in assists and defense…three-year starter at Memphis State in career sandwiched around a tour of duty in the Korean War…NCAA all-regional selection as a junior…a year later, led the Tigers to runner-up spot in NIT…all-NIT selection…turned down offer from Boston Celtics to return to his southern Indiana hometown to coach…four unbeaten seasons, seven regional championships…in 1970 and ’75 semistate championships that gave the Lions two trips to the Final Four…the ’75 team, which included Butcher’s son, Bill, went undefeated all the way to the state championship game, where Marion won out.
